Some random thoughts

 Last night I attended a Matins service at a local Orthodox church, to say that I have never experienced such beauty in a church service is quite a bit of an understatement. I have been contemplating the idea of beauty recently not only in church but also in art in general. Now that does not mean that I am not going to be playing rock n roll on the radio anymore, far from it it was a sweet reminder that I must absolutely commit to searching out and presenting only the absolute best music that I can find to share with my listeners. Playing music by such artists such as Dirt Poor Robins, Dave Brons, Daniel Day, Dave Bainbridge, Glass Hammer, Michael Hakanson-Stacy & the Gullywhumpers, Music Tellers, The 77's, Nick Fletcher, Mark Lettieri and others in not only a joy it is an obligation that I take very seriously. I was told some time ago by a person who keeps tabs on such things that under the parameters on one show, one host, one station that I am doing the worlds oldest rock radio show. Now that and three dollars will get me on the subway in NYC but if it is true that is a pretty cool. When I first started "Rock N Soul Gospel" I made a promise to God that If he gave the show longevity that I would honor Him by playing only the best music that I could find. With that promise I was hoping for a possible five year run maybe at the most ten. We are just a few short months away from entering our forty fourth year on the air at 88.1fm & WCWP.org. The show airs every Sunday afternoon from two until six pm. Check it out.

 Can it possibly be that I have not written a new blog since January and it is now August. My how time flies when you are secluded due to a worldwide pandemic. So many things have happened personally over the past 8 months. The radio show is going stronger than it ever has and the music, of superior quality, has been coming in slow but steady. With new projects from The Choir, TJ Stafford, Steve Lawson and new music from Dave Bainbridge and Glass Hammer on the horizon I am one happy camper.On the other side of the page though as a Christian I am aware that I do not have the option of giving up on church in general. That being said, although there are some few exceptions, I have for the most part given up on the idea  that the western church cares at all on creating great art and is content with sub-par art and poor propaganda. There was a time in the long ago when the great art and artists in the west were either mentored by or commision

ed by the church. Today we have either K-Love or films so poorly made that they wouldn't even make it on the Hallmark channel. "The Chosen" film series seems to be a pleasant exception though. In just about 2 months time "Rock N Soul Gospel" will be celebrating 40 years on the air at 88.1fm & WCWP.org with the debut of new music from Glass Hammer and Chad Marriott. Hopefully if all goes well I am shooting for a even 50 years of doing the show.  Today is January 18th 2021 and covid is still raging not only in the United States but all around the world. Besides that the political sense here is extremely tense due to the results of the recent precedential election. The only constant that remains is the need for spiritual healing and the restoration of beauty in the world. In some small way I can only hope and pray that the radio program "Rock N Soul Gospel" can in some way add to the restoration of beauty in the world at large. Now by that I do not mean that I am changing the format to light or beautiful music. What it means is that I will continue to strive to present only the very best music that I can possibly find to share with those who have ears to listen. As I am writing this piece I am listening to the debut album by the band Alloy Field, this is just some really excellent kick ass rock n roll. You really need to check them out!!! Something you also should look into are the Coroenesphere concert series on you tube featuring Mike Roe & Bruce Spencer. They are as of this week up to episode 41. Although live music venues are still shut down, 2020 was a magnificent year for new music as evidenced by new releases from Dave Brons, Iona, Glass Hammer and a host of others including Steve Lawson & Trip Wamsley. There are some hopeful rumors that due to the vaccine that we might be back to some semblance of normality by the autumn of this year although being the pessimist that I tend to be I am not holding my breath waiting for it. "Rock N Soul Gospel" is now in its 40th year on the air at 88.1fm & WCWP.org and I am so grateful that I get to work at the best radio station in NY. Thanks to the grace of God and the compassion of my station manager the great Dan Cox I get to share the best music around and will keep doing so for as long as I possibly can do so. By the way for those of you with a more literary bent be sure to check out the library visits with Malcolm Guite on you tube, they are a balm for the soul.

WCWP radio studio's have been on lock down since mid-March due to the  pandemic, luckily though thanks to the help of Dan Cox I have been able to keep the radio show alive recording from a home studio. Without trying to sound to cocky I believe the show has never sounded better and my enthusiasm for it is at an all time high. Lately I have been reading a number of books on creativity as well as listening to various podcasts such as Amon Sul and True Tunes. Also the you tube visits with Malcolm Guite to his library are veritable life savers.

These have helped give me the shot in the arm that I need when a certain amount of cabin fever begins to creep in. When I was doing the show out of the station I would usually bring along maybe sixty or seventy albums with me to have a good choice so that the show would not sound stale or repetitive. Now that I am recording in my home studio that choice is greatly expanded, so the show sounds better and better each time I open up the microphone. Now don't get me wrong I really miss the interaction with the other DJ's each week, I also miss wandering around the lower east side of NYC and going to the various clubs like the Rockwood Music Hall or the Mercury Lounge and seeing the kids that I play on the radio doing their thing live. Over all though I am one happy camper and although online concerts are not the same as a real live gig they will have to suffice for now. By the way for those of you who have an artistic bent be sure to check out the Hutchmoot Homebound conference coming up in October. In just a tad under two more months "Rock N Soul Gospel will be entering its 40th year on 88.1fm WCWP. The show can be heard every Friday from 9 till 11pm NY time and Sundays from 8pm until 10pm on WCWP.org, those are NY time by the way. As always it is my firm commitment to whoever listens that I will play the very best rock n roll on the radio.

Back in mid-March Long Island University closed its campus due to the covid 19 virus. It also closed down the studios of 88.1fm & WCWP.org, Luckily I had enough back logged programs to tide me over until I was, with major help from my station manager and long time friend Dan Cox, able to set up a home studio to continue to produce new shows. Now I am able to record programs with material from a vast music library at hand. I would usually bring up about 100 CD's to the station, now I have much more of a song choice to work with. Since the home studio has been in effect I feel like I have been given a new thrust of creativity and the shows are better then they ever were before. In just a little over three months the show will enter its 40th year on the air at WCWP and it is my intention now more than ever to play and to share with my listeners the absolute best rock n roll on the radio. How could I possibly do otherwise, actually why in the world would I want to do otherwise. With music from artists like Glass Hammer, Dave Bainbridge, Phil Madeira, Phil Keaggy, Dave Brons and others I can do just that and that is just what I intend to do. I find at my age, I'm in my seventies by the way, I have little to no tolerance for artists who claim to be Christians and yet put out 2nd and 3rd rate material and expect people to put up with it simply because the connect they name Jesus with it. Unfortunately the Western Church seems to have fallen into this mindset which is a true shame. I don't mean everyone in the Western Church has fallen into this habit but many have and it is a shame. I am also seeing that the Eastern Church is producing art not only music but literature and other forms of media of a magnificent nature. Today is the second day of March 2020, next month will be the 52nd anniversary of my very first radio show. It happened aboard the USS Long Beach CGN9 cruising around on the way to the Tonkin Gulf off the coast of Viet-Nam back in 1968. The very first song that I played was "The Supernatural" by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Peter Green on lead guitar. It was and is an amazing song which still gives me the chills every time that I hear it even today. It became the opening song for the two years that I did that program on KCGN radio, part of the armed forces radio network in Viet-Nam. Fast forward 52 years and my present radio show "Rock N Soul Gospel" is well into its 39th year on the air at 88.1fm & WCWP.org, the station of Long Island University Public Radio. My opening theme is a tune called "Check It Out" by After The Fire, a British band that was on fire back in the '80's. 39 years later I still get pumped up whenever I hear this song. "RNSG" started out as, for lack of a better term, the atypical Christian Rock show and has developed into a program of music by artists who happen to hold to a Christian world view. To be very honest I have very little interest in what passes for Christian music these days. I tend to find it contrived and boring. The worst offense I could hand my listeners would be is to play boring music, why should I waste their time and mine for that matter. Fortunately the music that I get to play every week is some of the absolute best rock n roll the I have ever heard and I am now 70 years old. Artists like Phil Madeira, Frank van Essen, Mark Lettieri, Tony Gerber & Phil Keaggy and others just continue to kick my butt every time I hear them.. Today is December 30th, 2019 and I just back from seeing the newest Star Wars film, it's a good popcorn movie. 2019 has at least in my opinion been a fantastic year for the arts. In the area of music, film, literature and media in general it has indeed been a very good year. With new music from Phil Madeira, Inhaler, multiple releases from Phil Keaggy, Bruce Cockburn, Ricky Berger, Glass Hammer, Dave Brons and others I have been thrilled with the music that I have been able to share with those who choose to listen to the radio show. There have been a number of conferences sponsored by the Eastern Orthodox Church on writings falling within the realm of fantasy and science fiction. It seems that while art created within the Western Church is catering to the lowest common taste, the Eastern Church is under going a resurgence in the arts, not only in the liturgical vein but also art in general. I am so very much looking forward to sharing great music and being exposed to great art over the course of the next decade with all of you. Coming up on October 14th, that's Columbus Day evening, Rock N Soul Gospel will be emceeing our 38th anniversary rock n roll spectacular at My Father's Place in Roslyn, Long Island. There will be two band playing that night: IZZ and Kinetic Element. Both bands have new albums out which they will be playing cuts from that evening. Tickets are available through MyFathersPlace.com, be sure to get yours while they are still available. Recently I was listening to a podcast and the host stated that the only songs that you will hear on the radio are the hits. I don't know what he has been listening to but I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Having worked for the past 38 years on a public radio station I find that my main concern is far from playing the hits, I want to play the absolute best music that I can find. When I first started the show, being a Christian, I made a vow to God that I would honor Him through the excellence of what I played on the show if He would give the show some longevity. In my mind I was thinking of maybe if I was lucky it might go for five years. Well, here we are thirty eight years later and still going strong. I still strive every program that I do to keep the commitment that I made all those years ago. There are times when I am absolutely overwhelmed by the excellence of the music that I get to share twice a week with whoever chooses to listen. We are approaching the middle of July and it has been one hot Summer. The only thing hotter than the temperature outside is the music that I have had the privilege of playing on "Rock N Soul Gospel" on 88.1fm & WCWP.org. The Summer always holds the chance to see some great live shows and this season is no different. This September holds out the hope to see some shows from Kerosene Halo as well as "Paul & Dave's Excellent Adventure" hitting the states featuring music from Paul Bielatowicz and Dave Bainbridge. I have also been playing some new tunes from artists such as Charlie Peacock, Sam Ashworth, Inhaler, Luxury and Delta Spirit. Although I won't be making the trek up to Soulfest this Summer, they will have music featuring Jim Trick, Maeve, The Violet Burning and my old friend Phil Keaggy. A few months ago I got a chance to see Phil along with Tony Levin & Jerry Marotta at a club in upstate New York. To say that they tore the place down is a complete understatement, they rocked that joint. "Rock N Soul Gospel" is getting ready to enter its 39th year on WCWP radio and I am more than ever committed to playing the absolute best rock n roll on the radio. It is the third day of June and I am thinking back on some of the new music that I have gotten for the radio show these past months and am continually amazed at the quality and excellence of the product I have received. Such albums as "Crickets" by Phil Madeira, "Sanctum" by Frank VanEssen, "All A Shimmer" by Cindertalk, "The Bucketlist" by Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin & Jerry Marotta, "Fire" by Gregorian Rock are just a few of the examples of music that I have the privilege of sharing with the listeners of "Rock N Soul Gospel" every week on 88.1fm & WCWP.org. It is so very important to me to only share the absolute very best music that I can find to turn you guys, generically speaking of course, on to. And without sounding too cocky, I believe that I am doing just that and I promise to keep on doing just that. The older that I get the more I am convinced that I just don't have the time or desire to indulge in second rate art of any kind and unfortunately so many people are willing to settle for inferior art whether it be music, film, literature or other forms of artistic expression. I just don't get it as to why people, especially those who claim to be Christians, are so very more than willing to accept inferior art or in so many cases just outright bad propaganda. Each and every week I look forward to getting back into Studio 2 at WCWP to crank out the best rock n roll on the radio and I will continue to do so as long as I am physically able or as long as my boss will put up with this cranky old fart. Today is Thursday March 21st the first official full day of Spring and as usual on Long Island it is overcast and rainy. Oh well, at least for this year Winter is a thing of the past. I spent a part of last week in Pennsylvania visiting my favorite bookstore "Hearts And Minds" in Dallastown, Pa. This is so much more than a mere bookstore, it is a sacred space and a place of magic and wondrous beauty. I picked up a copy of the new album from Over The Rhine as well as a book entitled "Every Moment Holy" from Rabbit Room Press, a book of prayers and liturgies for various moments in life with excellent drawings from my friend Ned Bustard. It has reminded me to look for the holy and sacred in the everyday things in life. And though the food in Pennsylvania is an absolute disaster for a diabetic, it is just so amazingly delicious, especially the buttered noodles found almost everywhere in Lancaster County. Also got a chance to see a concert with Mike Roe, Kerosene Halo & The Choir at a local church. Imagine, that a church that actually brings in acts that are producing great art instead of insipid propaganda, who could have imagined such a thing happening. It doesn't happen on Long Island where they think that what K-Love is doing is actually good. When the bands appeared at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, earlier that week only 20 people showed up that is just not right. Considering that NYC is the entertainment capitol of the world for that to happen is down right deplorable. At one point in time the Church was the prime instigator of all the great art in the western world, unfortunately that time has long since past and it is a true shame. When recently my friend Jae Jin appeared on the tv show "The Voice, not one judge turned to see who this amazing artist was. It just goes to show once again what an absolute joke that the shows of this type truly are. The judges wouldn't know great talent if it came up and bit them in the ass. Oh well, enough venting SXSW has come and gone so the festival season is upon us. There are good shows to be seen and heard, coming up in NYC next month are gigs from Over The Rhine, The Last Bison  and Leigh Nash. Indeed I am going to be a happy camper soon enough.

There is a sense of magic in the air, a sense of wonder and beauty. A feeling of the greatness of art and the satisfaction of being in a world where such beauty and wonder exists. It is still the beginning of February and the midst of winter but my mind is filled with the joy that comes from being exposed to great and wondrous music. So far this year I have gotten a number of new albums from artists that I love and have the privilege of sharing with the listeners of "Rock N Soul Gospel". Albums like "Cappadocia" by Jeff Johnson & Phil Keaggy, "The Bucket List" by Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin & Jerry Marotta, "Catch The Boom" by TNT Duo, "Sanctum" by Frank Van Essen. Others include, "Custodians Of Beauty" by Christian Frederickson, " Restless" by Steve Lawson & Pete Fraser and "The Waking Hours" by Matthew Perryman Jones. Every time I sit down behind the console in studio 2 of 88.1fm & WCWP.org. I get not just to do a good rock n roll radio show but I get to create a sonic tapestry that I hope will touch the hearts , minds and souls of listeners across the world. With new albums coming up in the near future from The Red Dirt Boys, Phil Madeira, Over The Rhine and others, 2019 looks toward being a spectacular year for good music all around.

The month of December and the year 2018 are rapidly drawing to a close on this brisk December afternoon. As I look back on the past year I am so, so very grateful on the music, the art and the life that I have exposed to. Rock N Soul Gospel, my radio show, is well into its 38th year on WCWP radio, the public radio station of Long Island University located on the campus of LIU Post on the north shore of Nassau county on Long Island. Each time that I walk into studio 2 of the station I am well aware that I have the chance to share the greatest rock n roll on the radio with whoever takes the time to listen. As I am writing this piece I am listening to a tune called "Labyrinth" from the album "Sanctum" by Frank VanEssen, actually I'm listening to the entire album. To say that it is sonic magnificence is such an understatement. The music that I have had a chance to share this past year with my listeners and friends is some of the best that I have heard in my 69 years on this planet. Artists such as Frank VanEssen, Ashley Cleveland, Phil Madeira, Tess Wiley, Glass Hammer, The Choir, Derri Daugherty, Big Kettle Drum and others make the twice a week trip up to the radio station a journey of love. Besides the music, books that have come out this past year by such authors as Stephen Lawhead, Christopher Tolkien, Micheal Haldas and Malcolm Guite have kept my mind on a wonderful and wonder filled pilgrimage into the world of imagination. DVD documentaries by Steve Bell & Malcolm Guite, Andrew Wall's "The Fantasy Makers" and the in studio film from Dave Bainbridge & Sally Minnear are food for my soul. As good as 2018 has been 2019 looks to be even better with new music from Over The Rhine, Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin & Jerry Marotta's trio project called "The Bucket List" as well as the album from Jeff Johnson & Phil Keaggy are the promise of things to come for the new year. This coming weekend, October 19th & 21st marks the 37th anniversary of my radio show "Rock N Soul Gospel". After 37 years of going up to LIU Post's radio station I am still excited every time I slip in the CD by "After The Fire" and click in the tune "Check It Out". The reason I am still excited is simply because I know that what follows for either the next 2 hours on Friday night or 4 hours on Sunday night is the best rock n roll that I can find to share with my listeners.The older that I get, a few weeks short of 69 at the time of this writing, the less I find that I am concerned with what's popular. Just look at the American Music Awards or the I Heart Awards and you'll know what I mean. What I am passionate about is music that will stop you in your tracks and make you take notice and trust me there is plenty of it out there that will do just that. There is so much of it out there that at the end of each shift I look back and realize that there was just so much more music that I could have played. Oh well those tunes will just have to wait for the next show. Artists such as Glass Hammer, The Choir, Lights For Landing, Heidi Rickard, Simon Fitzpatrick, Matthew Perryman Jones and others just bowl me over with the quality and excellence of the music that they are releasing. It is singers and bands like this that keep me going week after week and year after year. This past weekend was the unofficial end of the Summer season and although Summer is gone there is no end to the amount of great music and art that is available. About a year or so ago I came across a group based out of Colorado Springs in the western USA called the Anselm Society. It seems that they are picking up where the Kindlings Muse left off. Intelligent podcasts on various aspects of art, faith and imagination as well as retreats and conferences. Next month they are featuring a retreat centered around discussions on the last novel by C.S. Lewis entitled "Till We Have Faces". Their web site is Anselmsociety.org. If I were not half a continent away I would be at all of their events soaking in all that they have to offer. There are already over thirty podcasts up on their web site ready to listen to and to download and they are all top quality discussions feeding the mind and soul There was a time when the church was the instigator of the majority of the great art in the western world. She, the church, mentored artists, she commissioned great works of art and she cared for the art that was created. For the most part, unfortunately the modern church has abdicated that position in favor of second and third rate art and just poorly done propaganda. Just listen to radio stations like the K-Love system or any of the films by Kirk Cameron for examples of this. Now, I am not making a blanket statement but for the most part this is true. Yet there are exceptions to the norm, the churches that comprise those involved in the Anselm Society are beacons of hope and light in a dimly lite world.

Musically it has been an awesome Summer season with new releases by Glass Hammer, Derri Daugherty, The Innocence Mission, Big Kettle Drum, The Choir and others. The festival season is drawing to a close which means smaller road trips are in order. Jaunts to Jammin' Java in Vienna, Virginia, The Basement O' Sound in New Jersey and of course the various clubs in NYC are just the thing to satiate a case of wanderlust. Upcoming shows in NYC and upstate include: Leigh Nash, Nobody's Girl, and a quartet show including Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta and Mike Pachelli. Judging from the trailers that I have seen as of late there are some interesting looking films on the horizon as well as the new television season kicking off the week of September 24th. Keep your mind open and be on the outlook for great art and music because it is everywhere. Also be sure to check out the Doxacon Conference happening later this year in Washington, D.C.

In just a little over 4 weeks I will be heading up to Gilford, New Hampshire to the Gunstock Mountain Resort for Soulfest 2018. I have been teaching a seminar on the convergence and need for art, faith & imagination at the festival for over 10 years now. Periodically I find myself getting into the mindset when I go to events like this where I feel that the music and performances almost becomes second to the growing need to renew interpersonal relationships. I get to see friends that I only see once every year or so and these friendships are near and dear to me. People like Jim Trick, Courtney Reid, Michael Pritzl, Christopher Williams, Rachel Taylor & Dan Russell are good for my soul and my mind. Seeing and being with folks like this encourages me that there are actually artists who are concerned with art and beauty in this broken old world of ours. Artists who are committed to creating great art and beauty and not just churning out second rate propaganda like meat coming out of a sausage grinder. On top of all that the visual aspect of the location of the festival is nothing short of spectacular. A few years ago I took an open cockpit biplane ride over Lake Winnipesaukee which is right near the festival sight. It was an amazing ride and one which just might indulge in once again. The Gunstock Mountain Resort is also the home to an excellent zip line ride, one of these days I might actually get up the nerve to try it. I did the mountain coaster last year and it was great. Soulfest, here we come!!!

We are finishing the first full week of May and Spring is finally in full bloom. I can tell this partially because of the green layer of pollen all over my black Honda Civic, fondly named The Music Machine, and partly because I am no longer waking up to temperatures in the low '30's. May also marks the 50th anniversary of my very first radio show on KCGN radio back in my Viet-Nam days. Can it be really half a century ago, time really does fly by quickly. Some of the things that I am looking forward to this Spring are the release of a new book series by Stephen Lawhead called "Irelandia". The first book in this new trilogy comes out on May 15th and is called "In The Region Of The Summer Stars". Also coming out this month is a new project of old gospel blues tunes by Ry Cooder entitled "The Prodigal Son" as well as a new release from my favorite band Glass Hammer. There are just too many amazing literary conferences and music & art festivals to consider making them all, although I would love to try. Over The Rhine is once again hosting the Nowhere Else Festival over Memorial Day Weekend out in Ohio with an absolutely spectacular line-up including Red Dirt Boys and Phil Madeira. In August I'll be teaching a seminar on the convergence of art, faith and imagination st Soulfest up in New Hampshire and getting a chance to hang out with some of my favorite artists around. Folks such as Jim Trick, Rachel Taylor, Courtney Reid, Michael Pritzl and Dan Russell. We are into the first week of April and although it is officially Spring there is every night on the news the threat of more snow. When will it ever end, soon I trust. Late April, early May marks the 50th anniversary of the very first radio show that I ever did. 50 years of doing this and I'm not tired of it yet, rather I look forward to each and every show with renewed excitement. The thrill of sharing what I consider to be the best rock n roll ever recorded is what keeps me going each week. When I sit down in Studio 2 at 88.1fm & WCWP.org, open up that microphone and hit the play button on the first song it is such a rush of pleasure. On May 5th I am receiving a lifetime achievement award for 37 years of doing this particular program, it is nice to be recognized by my peers at the station. I have heard various people in the music industry complain about the lack of good music coming out so far this year. I on the other hand am so totally happy with the material that I have gotten this year to share with my listeners. I get to play great tunes twice a week and am just loving it more and more each and every year with, God willing, no end in sight. I just found out this week that I'll be going back to Soulfest in August to teach a seminar on the convergence of art, faith and imagination. I am looking forward to this as well as seeing old New England friends such as Jim Trick, Courtney Reid, Dan Russell, Michael Pritzl & Lights For Landing and hearing them share their music. Also this week I learned that we will, as we have for over 25 summers now, be giving away tickets for Splish Splash Water Park out on Long Island. It is going to be a good Summer!!!
